APW - Rockford, "Railroad King" marked mvt, "M. Rothschild, Elmira, N.Y." marked dial, Grade 84, 15J, 18S, 14K gold original Roy & Co. HC, gold cuvette, white enamel DS dial, fancy gilt Louis XV style hands, SW-LS, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#322749. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.8 dwt (141.2 g). An interesting and rare private label marking, the Rockford "Railroad King" is listed in the 1987 book "American Pocket Watches Identification and Price Guide" by Roy Ehrhardt and Bill Meggers with note that the "M. Rothschild, Elmira, N.Y." is correct to this watch. Mendel Rothschild was a retailer jeweler located at 128 E. Water Street, Elmira, New York, and in later life Rothschild relocated his business to Reading, Pennsylvania.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color, very small spot of abrasion at perimeter of balance cock foot, few fine scratches to balance cock, few small bits of oxide to regulator assembly; dial with outer chapter hl near 5, fine scratch crossing right side of center section and continuing on partially across outer chapter near 3, faint hl above seconds-register; fine hands, hour missing a portion of its hub; case shows little wear, few slight subtle dings to front, numerous dings to rear, engine turning detail reduced at shoulders and good elsewhere; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
